Short film: pre production- Storyboard (original) and shot list

Image
I have completed the pre production process. I am aiming to film on the weekend of the 2nd-3rd June with any reshoots taking place the following weekend of the 10th. The story board I have updated to compliment the length of shots in the film. The shots were way too long and unrealistic. Here is the original and the updated version of it.

Short film: treatment

"Stuck in the Middle" Two scenes: -Dinner with parents -Ellie's bedroom Treatment: Ellie is a young girl of about 8 years old. She's an only child something she's not happy with as she has always dreamed of having a younger brother. However, this is made to be impossible as she has come to the conclusion that her parents no longer love each other. In fact, it is only her that is keeping them together. But being an 8 year old she doesn't have the sophistication to understand that... That is what her parents expect. One thing they can agree on is that Ellie is too naive to understand the situation in their eyes. But Ellie is anything but. Ellie doesn't really have a lot of friends or in her eyes they are 'bitches', she claims they never share their pencils or let her play with her at playtime. Ellie's only real friend is movies and television, she's not your typical little girl who's obsessed with dolls and teddies but films...

What the question is asking -How is Tarantino's writing different in Pulp Fiction then to other films being made at the time?  -What is unique about it? -How does his way of writing effect the audience -The traditional Hollywood film structure follows the 'Three Act Structure'. All films have a start, a middle and an end. Paragraph 1: Tarantino's way of story making for 'Pulp Fiction' complex, layered narrative through sub-stories/chapters. Repetition of scenes. Titling and 'chapterising' Paragraph 2: The extent of which his work follows the conventional approach The Hollywood way of filmmaking is centralising the story around the situation rather then a character. Within each 'chapter' of the film, the concept of the three act structure can be seen when scrutinising each story despite the disjointed nature of the entirety of the film.   The majority of films follow the conventional "Three Act Str...

Pulp Fiction: Representation and Institutional

Image
Representation Gender -Mia's introduction is quite alluring (the extreme close up of her lips when speaking to Vincent). It compliments her seductive voice and the diegetic music. The audience is able to empathise with Vincent as despite the fact that we get a shot of Mia, her back is facing away from the  camera meaning that our understanding of her appearance is as unclear as it is to Vincent. The implications of this is that Tarantino enables the audience ro really feel the sexual tension within the scene. - Sound: Diegetic- 'Son of A Preacher Man' by Dusty Springfield = Sexual, powerful. It compliments Mia's demeanour. Mia's voice-intercom-  mysterious, asserts her power. This is physically made apparent through her control over the cameras watching his every move. Mia takes advantage of the fact that Vincent is now in a vulnerable position and is dependent on her commands. Once again, Tarantino allows the audience to understand the ...

Pulp Fiction: Indiewood

1980s saw Hollywood convert back to the studio system of the 30s and 40s. This time the owners controlled the film business rather than the studio bosses. An alternative to the Hollywood film system for the independent filmmakers was created to give them creative control which was heavily compromised in conventional ways. This alternative was to become knows as Indiewood Big budget Hollywood films are given a deadline and are subject to focus group viewings. Independent films gain success and acclaim through film festivals. Hollywood vs Indies       -Movies - Films -Fantasy - Realism -Safe -Controversial -Expensive - Low Budget -Genre Raiders - Personal Vision -Studio gets the final cut - Director gets the final cut -Large Scale - Intimate -Sequels - Unique -Special FX - Script Made on low budgets some of the independent films made profit at the box office It's important to understand the context surrounding the production of ...

Tarantino and Pulp Fiction

-Left school at sixteen to become an actor. -Had been passionate about film since he was young. -He worked in a video store and used his wages to finance shooting at first a short film then transformed it into a feature. It was a failure. -Tarantino's extremely unique way of writing is inspired through the fact that he is a viewer. He has 'translated novelistic techniques and translated them into cinema.' -European filmmaking centralises its story about a character. In Hollywood it is about the situation. -Tarantino's storyline does not follow the linear structure but is a lot more distorted- 'It jumps backwards and forwards.' -75% of novels and films work best in a linear way. However, the remaining 25% is less sophisticated but more effective. -Through his iconic cinematic techniques, Tarantino keeps the audience engaged with the action and prevents the audience from being perplexed. This link back to his way of writing as seeing it as a v...

Vertigo and OFOTCN: Production contexts

Editing -The editing within the film is used to allow the audience to capitulate with the action on screen and empathise with characters. This was fundamentally influenced by the 'New Hollywood' wave of filmmaking which exemplified the notion that editing can be manipulated to have a more realistic effect. Example of this in the film include: The first therapy scene- As the arguments break out between Harding and the other patients, the editing which started as slow pace and minimal cuts in between transitions transforms into a more rapid pace. The audience is able to equally empathise and sympathise with the characters as the quick cuts exemplifies the boiling point of the tension between Harding and the other patients Sound: -The sound in the film is mainly diegetic which has the effect of allowing the audience to emphasise with the characters. They can be indulged into the vulnerability and captivity the patients are feeling.  ...
