    There is some fantastic use of film language in here, really great to see. Overall your analysis is to a good level. The only area that I feel you need to develop is having the ability to recognise what effect the scene is intended to have on the audience.

COG: How does 'City of God' represent masculinity as aggressive?

In 'City of God', we are made to feel intimidated and uncomfortable when it comes to male aggression. The proportion between the amount of men and women we see in the film is so substantial that it makes us really concentrate on male dominance. This aggression is shown through the mise-en-scene, editing, sound, lighting and cinematography. Despite not being an essential character, Shorty plays a part in probably the most sensitive and disturbing scenes in the film. In this scene, Shorty discovers his wife cheating on him and he takes his exasperation out by killing his wife with a shovel. The fast paced editing makes virtually impossible to sympathise with the wife as we only get a quick take of her screaming and hiding herself in the corner of the room. 1980s saw Hollywood convert back to the studio system of the 30s and 40s. This time the owners controlled the film business rather than the studio bosses. An alternative to the Hollywood film system for the independent filmmakers was created to give them creative control which was heavily compromised in conventional ways. How useful has an ideological critical approach been in understanding binary oppositions in the narratives of your chosen films?

Plan: Argument: It is through the ideology of feminism that Andrea Arnold visualises for the spectator the binary oppositions of male versus female and good versus evil. Confronting the travellers/gypsies (male versus female) - use of hand-held, proximity between characters and camera, use of over-the-shoulder shots. Mia and Connor sex scene   (male versus female/good versus evil) - the connotations of hand-held, over-the-shoulder shots, scopophilia and the male gaze. Andrea Arnold's fascinating film, 'Fish Tank', follows the story of an aggressive teenage girl, Mia, going through her day to day life. Her emotional connection with her mother's boyfriend, Connor, enlightens the spectator to a side of Mia that is not illuminated before his entry.
