Sound in both films + essay question

With close reference to the TWO films you have studied, explore how EITHER sound OR editing create meaning?

Sound: Pan's Labyrinth


-Before the treacherous action is committed by Vidal, the only sound that is audible for the audience, apart from the dialogue, is the foley sound of crickets in the woods. This further stresses the intensity of the scene and compliments the use of little light used throughout it. 
-The sheer brutality of fascism is highlighted through the emphasis of the noise the bottle makes when making contact with the hunter's face. This diegetic sound is also complimented by the quiet, flabbergasting, parallel string music that can be heard when we see the hunter being stabbed in the eye.
-When the other hunter is shot in the head, the noise of the gun is so loud that it makes it is almost inaudible to hear the gunshot reverb. However, this sound effect has been manipulated in order to compliment the strings as it is turned into a sort of deep Cello note. It can be argued that the volume of the stabbing is louder then the gunshot which further portrays the power the fascists bestowed. It is a minor but extraordinary way, Del Toro proclaims the devastation of fascism.




-As Ferreiro attempts to leave, quiet, emotional non-diegetic music is played exemplifying the Doctor's innocence and this internally perplexes our emotions. The music is contrapuntal, which guides us in the complete opposite direction to how we should be feeling. What makes this so different to the hunter's scene which is where death also occurs, the music was suspensive and shocking which highlighted the suddenness of the deaths and brought to the audience's attention the destructive side of Vidal. However, in this scene it is a strange joyful yet saddening piece off music further showing how the Doctor was guilty free and meant no harm.
-The volume of the gunshot completely overrules the emotional and guiltless music. It has been manipulated purposely to have this effect and highlights once again the superiority and dominance of the fascists over the communists. Del Toro is allowing the audience to have semi-independence on their emotions as the action on screen creates a depressing atmosphere but the music creates the complete opposite and a more positive atmosphere.  


Sound: City Of God

-Opening scene begins with supposed non-diegetic music and transforms into diegetic when we see a guitar come into a shot. The music is contrapuntal as the chickens on screen look frightened and bewildered but the music creates a very festive and enlightening atmosphere. This in turn makes the audience unsure to how to feel emotionally towards the scene. We are also able to get an insight into the social context of when the film is set.
-The music may be contrapuntal but it does have some parallels to it. The tempo is extremely rapid which correspondingly connotes the chicken's petrified side and how fast its heart is racing. This in turn enables the audience to empathize and sympathize with the chicken as we  get an insight into its internal emotions.
